demonstrate an understanding that coasts present hazards and offer opportunities for people hazards including coastal erosion and tropical storms

•coasts presents both hazards and opportunities

•coastal hazards:
          •rapid coastal erosion:
•houses may fall; destroys private land; increases housing density; decreases
                      housing price
•creates rock slides with boulders; a constant hazard
                                •e.g: East Yorkshire Coast

          •tidal surges:
•coastal flooding; blocks transport routes; destroys businesses and homes; massive insurance premiums
•strong winds and low pressure increases water surface and storm surges

          •tsunamis:
•fast and high impact; prevents transport, massive loss of lives; huge rebuild times and costs; ruins property and infrastructure
•farmland becomes saline and unusable; coastal territory underwater
•caused by earthquakes; nuclear spillage e.g Fukushima

          •hurricanes:
                    •destroys habitats; death
•high precipitation; flooding; deep low pressure systems; air swirls
•weakens economy; ruins all types of infrastructure
                             •27+ degrees in the tropics

•coastal opportunities:
•fishing; crabbing (Grimsby); provides jobs and food
•holiday homes (Monaco); improves tourism and economy
•tourist opportunities (Brighton); more jobs and economy boost
          •trade (Rotterdam)
          •water leisure activities (Gold Beach)
          •HEP opportunities (Bristol)
•lots of transport and oil terminals (Easington)
